Dr. Matilde Sassani from Italy
I started studying at PreMed in 2009. At the time, I was working as a classical ballet dancer at the Hungarian State Opera House.
PreMed was invaluable in providing me with the tools and knowledge necessary to successfully study medicine at Semmelweis University, where I graduated summa cum laude and first in my class in 2016.
To these days, I cherish the memory of the time I spent at PreMed: I remember a vibrant and multicultural atmosphere. In particular, my favourite subjects were: English communication, biology, and chemistry.
Communication was not merely about speaking in English: in those hours, we learnt about each other’s cultures and I got to meet good friends with whom I am still in contact to these days.
The biology classes were precious: we were taught the subject in a way that was easily accessible to all of us and yet the level of detail was not only sufficient to enter University, but was comparable to the one of biology courses we later had at University.
Chemistry classes were inspirational and they introduced me to one of my favourite subjects: biochemistry. I have since worked in the biochemistry department of Semmelweis University as an undergraduate and I am currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Sheffield where I am investigating energy metabolism in neurodegenerative conditions.
Looking back, going to McDaniel College was a turning point in my life: I realised how much I enjoyed finding things out and learning about science and it provided me with the confidence that I would be able to pursue a career in medicine and science.
